Huawei GPON ONT HG8546M

The passive optical network (PON) is a point-to-multipoint (P2MP) optical access technology, which adopts the broadcast mode in the downstream direction and time division multiple access (TDMA) mode in the upstream direction. Passive indicates that the optical distribution network (ODN) does not have any active electronic components or power supply but consists of passive components including the optical splitter.

As a type of PON, the gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON), which is defined in the ITU-T G.984.x recommendations, supports an upstream rate of 1.25 Gbit/s and a downstream rate of 2.5 Gbit/s.

A typical GPON access system is composed of three parts:

• Optical line terminal (OLT)
• Optical network terminal (ONT) or optical network unit (ONU)
• ODN

The ODN connects the OLT and the ONU/ONT.

Purpose

GPON adopts the passive optical transmission technology and is mainly applied in fiber to the home (FTTH), fiber to the building (FTTB), fiber to the office (FTTO), and fiber to the mobility base station (FTTM) scenarios to provide the following services:

• Voice service
• Data service
• Video service
• Leased line service
• Distributed service

GPON supports high bandwidth transmission, which effectively removes the bandwidth bottleneck in the access through twisted pairs and meets the users’ requirements for high bandwidth services such as high definition TV (HDTV) and live programs.

GPON supports long-distance access, which solves the long-distance coverage problem of the access through twisted pairs and reduces the number of network nodes.
